11 Doctrinal Statements on Creation

  1. God is Eternally Uncaused and Transcendent. God created out of nothing (he spoke creation into existence). When we create, we can only do so with things already created. Nothing existed before God. Nothing caused God. If God were created, God would cease to be God. Isaiah 55:8-9; John 1:3
  2. God is One and Alone. The focus of Genesis 1-3 is not cosmological; it is theological as it proclaims a Creator and a creation who is subjected to the Creator. God has no rivals. God is One and Alone but exists as three persons, yet one essence. Deuteronomy 6:4
  3. God is Creator. There is no conflict between Christianity and science (of which God rules over). “The scientific method depends on the kind of underlying worldview that a creating and providentially ruling God of the Bible provides” (Driscoll, Mark. Doctrine). Col. 1:16
  4. God is Living, Immanent, and Sustainer. God is actively involved in Creation. God did not create and then step back (as both historic and modern-day deists claim). Job 38:33-37
  5. God is Trinitarian. The Trinitarian God created and sustains. This means that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, in community with each other, came before creation and is actively involved in creation. Hebrews 1:3; 1 Cor. 8:6
  6. God is Gracious. God reveals Himself through creation known as General Revelation. This is not sufficient for saving faith but it does not excuse others from not knowing a God exists. Only Special Revelation, through Jesus and the Bible, can lead to a saving faith. We are saved through Jesus alone of which we can know this via Scripture alone. Romans 1:20
  7. God is Personal. Humans, male and female, are set apart from the rest of creation as God’s image bearers. We inhibit specific communicable traits not shared with the rest of creation. However, there are traits that we do not share with God. Those traits are incommunicable. Isaiah 43:3; Numbers 23:19
  8. God is Independent and Gracious. God created to enjoy; not because He needed it or was lonely. God is God-sufficient. God was and is never lonely. Exodus 3:14
  9. God is Beautiful and Majestic. When God created, he said, “It is good.” When God created humans, he said, “It is very good.” Not one of us can boast in contributing to the majestic colors and beauty of creation. Psalm 96:11-12
  10. God is Holy and King. When God created he set limits. Creation is subjected to a Creator God. We, though we may try, will never be God. When we try, we are being idolatrous, which springs from pride. 1 Peter 1:16
  11. God is Redeemer. All of creation groans for redemption (things are not the way they’re supposed to be due to sin). There will come a time when all things will be made new. There will come a time when creation will enter into a stage of glorification. Romans 8:19-22; Acts 4:12; Revelation 21:5
